Many people have had it happen before. You go to the store, attempt to make a purchase for which you have funds in your credit/debit account and get declined. Sometimes this is a mere error. Maybe you made a few purchases that were abnormally large recently. Perhaps you took a trip and they flagged as they often do when you don’t notify them. Or sometimes, as we are now finding out, you may have a fraudulent donation to “Friends of Scott Walker.”
The story begins with MaryAnn Nellis, a potter and retired teacher in upstate New York. According to ProPublica, the site that originally broke the story, Nellis had tried to pay for her groceries. She was declined despite knowing she had the funds to cover them. She called her credit card company, Capital One, and they informed her that her card was flagged. The reason? A $5 donation to “Friends of Scott Walker.” Nellis responded “Over my dead body.” She then contacted ProPublica, who requested she call Capital One again. Capital One informed her that they flag merchants who put through many illegitimate charges. They then confirmed that they have flagged any “Scott Walker activity,” according to Nellis.
It is true that these fraudulent charges could have been put through by hackers without the knowledge of Scott Walker. Unfortunately for Walker, in the last few months, he has expected us to take his word a lot that he has no knowledge of fraud charged against people we know are friends of Scott Walker. I am of course referring to the ongoing John Doe investigation for which Walker seems to think a massive legal defense fund is necessary. Most notably, one Walker aid and one appointee, Timothy Russell and Kevin Kavanaugh, have already been charged with felonies for allegedly embezzling funds from a group meant to help veterans and their families. Walker claims he had no knowledge, however he was responsible for transferring control of the money to them and was their boss at the time. They are also long time “friends of Scott Walker.”
Of course this all happened under Walkers watch, often in his office with secret e-mail systems, but he claims he had no knowledge of it. Additionally, prosecutors have issued charges against two other Scott Walker aides and one major campaign contributor. And don’t forget the twelve people who have immunity. This could, in fact, be the largest corruption scandal in history when it is all done. Even Reince Priebus, chair of the Republican National Committee has been implicated along with Herman Cain campaign manager Mark Block. This ongoing investigation seems to take so many twists and turns anything could happen or be revealed at this point.
